How to organize a garage sale.
A good garage sale is a week of small tasks, not a month of planning: pick a date, gather and price everything in one pass, advertise where your neighbors actually look, and decide up front what happens to the leftovers. The week before
- Pick the date and check the rules Saturday morning, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., is the safe default. Check whether your HOA or town requires a permit or limits signs — many do.
- Gather everything in one place One pass through the house, garage first. If it has not been used in a year and nobody objects out loud, it goes in the pile.
- Price it all in one sitting Whole dollars, stickers on everything, and prices you would pay at someone else's sale. The goal is an empty driveway, not top dollar.
- Post the big items online first Furniture, tools, and anything over $50 sell better with photos and a few days of lead time. Put them on a shareable list and mark them sold as deposits land.
- Advertise where neighbors look The neighborhood group chat, the community board, and corner signs with an arrow and the date. A link to your online list beats a list of items in a text.

- $100 in change: a roll of quarters, ones, and fives
- A cash box or apron that stays on a person, not a table

- Set up before the early birds They arrive 30 to 60 minutes before your posted start. Price nothing on the fly; it slows the line and invites haggling on everything.
- Drop prices after lunch By noon, everything left is half off. The last hour is "make me an offer."
- Handle the leftovers the same day Keep the online list up for anything with real value, put the rest in the FREE box or a donation run, and mark the list items sold as they go.
Common questions
What sells best at a garage sale?
Tools, kids' gear, kitchen items, and furniture priced to move. Clothes sell slowly unless they are sorted by size and cheap.
How should I price things?
Low enough that you would grab it at a neighbor's sale. Big items are the exception: price those properly and list them online ahead of time.
What if it rains?
Move the date, or move the sale online. A shareable list with photos does not care about the forecast, and buyers pick up when it clears.
Do I need a permit?
Depends on your town and HOA. Search your town name plus "garage sale permit," and check HOA rules for sign limits.
