Downsizing checklist: what to do, week by week.

Downsizing works when it runs on a calendar instead of a mood. Start eight weeks out, do one category at a time, and give every item one of four exits: keep, sell, give, or toss. This checklist walks the timeline and shows where an online list keeps the selling from taking over your life.

Works for a smaller home, a retirement move, or clearing a family house.

The timeline

Eight weeks is comfortable. Four is possible. Two is a very long weekend.

The four exits

Keep

It fits the new floor plan — physically. If the measuring tape says no, it moved to another pile, not the truck.

Sell

Worth someone driving over for. Photograph it once, put it on the list, and let the link do the repeating.

Give

Family first with a deadline, then neighbors, then the charity pickup. Open-ended offers stall the whole timeline.

Toss

Broken, expired, or unsellable. The junk haul at week two exists so this pile cannot move house with you.

Why the selling goes online

The selling is what stretches a downsize from weeks into months: every item photographed again for every buyer, every "is this still available?" answered by hand. Putting everything on one shareable list cuts that to a single pass — photos and prices once, one link for family, neighbors, and group boards, and a sold label that answers the repeat questions for you.

It also keeps the decisions honest. A price on an item is a decision made; a "maybe" pile is a decision deferred to moving day.

Common questions

Where do I start?

The easiest category, not the hardest room. Books, linens, and duplicate kitchen gear build momentum. Photos and keepsakes go last, with time protected for them.

What about things family might want?

Offer everything at once with a reply-by date, or share your sell list with the family group chat and let them claim items from it.

Is an estate sale company worth it?

For a full house on a short timeline, often yes — expect a large share of proceeds to go to the company. For a normal downsize, a few weekends and one shareable list usually cover it.

What if things do not sell?

Drop the price at week four, mark it free at week two, and let the charity pickup take the rest. The goal is an empty room, not a perfect return.

Start with ten items

Photograph ten things this weekend, put them on the list, and send the link to family first.
